Drilling in ANWR won't Happen

I've just returned from Washington, DC where I lobbied for the Alaska Wilderness League, and if my conversations with various Senators and Congressmen from both parties mean anything, it appears the "Drill, Baby, Drill" nonsense will not reach into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"There just aren't the votes to drill in ANWR," said Sen. John Thune, and that view was echoed by Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Sen. Tim Johnson.

Nor does drilling in ANWR make sense.

The US has just 3 percent of the world's oil supply, and that includes what is suspected to be in ANWR, a miniscule amount, and drilling there won't lower gasoline prices by more than a few cents, and those savings wouldn't occur for at least the next fifteen years.

What the GOP strategists have managed to do, with great success, is take a conplicated issue and convert it into a few second sound bite.
