Teawaukon NWR Gets New Manager
Jeff King is the new Refuge Manager at the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge. A native of Kentucky, Jeff has worked in the natural resource field for 22 years. Jeff graduated from the University of Tennessee and began his
career as a wildlife biologist for the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission. For the next 15 years he worked throughout the state on various programs including prescribed fire in the Everglades, establishing hunting
seasons and regulations, and conducting research projects on selected game, threatened, and endangered species. While working mostly on white-tailed deer and wild turkey research other projects included studying the threatened red-cockaded woodpecker and the endangered Florida Panther.
In 1998, Jeff began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a refuge manager on the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. Major duties included wetland habitat restoration and providing
nesting habitat for the endangered piping plover. In 2000, he transferred to the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Mississippi as the refuge manager and began focusing on providing wintering waterfowl habitat.
Part of Jeff’s responsibilities was working with local farmers to produce high calorie foods such as corn, rice, wheat, and milo for these wintering waterfowl. Natural foods were also created through water level management of impoundments. In 2003, Jeff transferred to the Regional
Office in Denver, CO to become the Regional Integrated Pest Management Coordinator. His duties included working with refuges in the eight mountain-prairie states (including North Dakota) to assist in the control and management of invasive species. Jeff served on many national teams
which developed policies for chemical use, mosquito control, and the use of genetically modified crops on refuges.
Jeff’s wife Laura also works for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Natural Resource Planner. She works on Comprehensive Conservation Plans for National Wildlife Refuges throughout the west. Her position remained
unchanged but was relocated to Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge when Jeff was selected as the new manager.
The Tewaukon Refuge staff will be hosting a “Meet the Manager” open house on July 15th after the field work slows down. In the meantime, feel free to call and stop in to the office and introduce yourself to Jeff and his wife Laura. The Refuge office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. The phone number to reach Jeff is 724-3598 ext. 11.
